Crimped Brush Filament: Materials, Specs, and Performance for Professional Finishes

Crimped brush filament is engineered with controlled waves along each strand to increase bulk, paint load, and stable release. The crimp creates capillary channels that pull coatings in and meter them out evenly, reducing lap marks and improving edge control. Compared with straight filament, crimped bundles resist matting, spring back after long strokes, and wash cleanly for longer service life.

Materials and construction. PBT and PET are the most common polymers because they offer solvent resistance, stiffness retention, and colorfastness. Nylon blends add abrasion toughness for rough surfaces and industrial cleaning. During manufacture, the crimp profile (amplitude and frequency) is heat-set so the curl holds its shape under heat and moisture. Options include tapering for softer tips, flagged ends for smooth layoff, anti-static additives, and color masterbatch for branding.

How to specify. Match diameter and crimp to the coating and tool. Finer gauges (0.07–0.15 mm) cut clean lines and finish smooth trim. Mid gauges (0.18–0.25 mm) balance pickup and glide for walls. Heavier gauges (0.28–0.35 mm) carry high-build primers and textured coatings. Deeper, tighter crimp boosts load; lighter, longer crimp improves flow and leveling. For paint brushes, denser crimp increases bulk without extra weight.

Performance checklist. Aim for water absorption ≤0.5%, softening point aligned to your bake or cleanup temperature (typically 120–150 °C), low shrinkage, and consistent cut length. Properly crimped filament reduces shedding at the ferrule or epoxy set and speeds cleanup afterwards.

Applications. Crimped filament excels in architectural brushes and rollers for water-borne acrylics and alkyds, industrial maintenance coatings, and specialty tools for adhesives and resins. It is also effective in cleaning brushes where debris capture matters.
