Brush Size Guide: Widths, Angles, Thickness and Bristle Length

How brush sizes are measured?
Width: distance across the bristle head (inches/mm).
Thickness: filament count/pack density; influences paint load.
Bristle length (out-of-ferrule): longer = smoother layoff, shorter = more control.
Shape: angled sash for precision; flat for coverage.
Stiffness: filament material + length; match to coating and temperature.

Quick size-to-task chooser
1–1.5 in: window grids, stair spindles, touch-ups, craft.
2 in angled sash: interior trim, baseboards, tight cut-ins along ceilings.
2.5 in angled sash: most users’ everyday brush—great balance of speed and line control.
3 in flat: doors, cabinets, fascia, long straight runs.
3.5–4 in flat: exterior siding, fences, decking handrails when a roller isn’t ideal.

Rule of thumb: pick the narrowest brush that fully fits the surface you’re painting. Step up one size when straight, open runs dominate.
Angled vs. flat (and specialty shapes)
Angled sash: excels at cutting-in; the heel edge lays crisp lines along profiles and corners.
Flat: maximum coverage on doors, panels, and fascia.
Oval/round sash: good for profiles and spindles; holds more paint than a same-width flat.
Short-handle “stubby”: tight spaces; great for cabinets and closets.
Thickness, bristle length, and stiffness—what they change
Thicker pack = more load and longer “dip-to-dip” distance, but slightly less finesse.
Longer bristles glide and level better on finishes; shorter feel stiffer for razor-sharp control.
Stiffness by material
Nylon/polyester blends (soft–medium): best for latex/acrylic; fewer brush marks.
Stiffer blends: push heavier primers, block stains, and work well in heat.
Natural bristle (hog/boar): for oil/alkyd/solvent only—natural tips swell in water-based paints.
Coating, climate, and surface match
Latex wall paint: 2.5” angled for cut-in, 3” flat for panels. Medium stiffness, flagged/tapered tips.
Cabinet enamels/trim urethanes: 2”–2.5” angled, longer/tapered, softer filaments for flow and leveling.
Exterior primers & rough siding: 3–4” flat, stiffer filaments to drive paint into texture.
Hot weather: step up stiffness one notch to maintain control as paint thins.
Cold weather: go slightly softer/longer to avoid drag.
Handles, ferrules, and tips
Beavertail handles reduce fatigue on long, straight cuts; short “palm” handles boost control in cabinets.
Stainless ferrules resist rust with water-based paints.
Tapered & flagged tips split into micro-ends that hold more paint and leave a smoother finish.
Technique: size matters only if you load and lay off correctly
Load half the bristle length, tap (don’t scrape) both sides.
Lay a wet line, then tip-off lightly with just the bristle tips in the direction of the grain.
Work out of a paint pail/liner for consistent loading.
Keep a wet edge; bigger brushes make this easier on open areas.

Interior kit: 2.5” angled sash + 3” flat.
Detail/exterior add-ons: 1.5” angled for tight spots, 3.5–4” flat for siding and fences.
Care that preserves size performance
Comb out paint, wash until the rinse runs clear, spin or shake dry, then sleeve the brush to maintain edge geometry. Never stand wet bristles on their tips.
