What Filament and Bristle for Paint Brushes Are Preferred in Different Countries Like USA, EU, France, Germany, Japan and Australia?

1. Different Types of Paints United States: Latex (water-based) paints are widely used, which have high viscosity and dry quickly and require: stiffer, more resilient brush filaments (such as 100% polyester or PBT/nylon blends) to ensure smooth and fast application. Europe: Oil-based or hybrid paints are still commonly used. These paints dry slower and require softer, finer bristles (such as natural pig bristle or soft PBT) for smooth, streak-free finishes.

2. Construction and Application Preferences U.S. painters often aim for speed and efficiency, especially for large surfaces. Stiff brushes benefit for fast coverage and strong paint pickup. Europe professionals focus more on precision and surface finishes, especially in historical or detailed interior work. Therefore, softer brushes are preferred for controlled strokes and fine results.

3. User Groups and Painting Cultures  In the U.S., DIY culture is very strong. Many users prefer firmer brushes that are easy to control and fast to use.  In Europe, professional painters are often formally trained and value the feel and smooth finish of a softer brush, even if it takes more time.

4. Climate and Drying Conditions  The climate of many regions of the U.S. are hot and dry. Paints dry fast, so stiffer brushes are suitable to apply paints efficiently before they set.  In Europe, however, especially in humid or cooler areas, the slow drying allows more time for brushing. Therefore, soft filaments can be used to achieve a finer finish without visible brush marks.

5. Market Tradition and Brand Influence  Major U.S. brands like “Purdy” or “Wooster” use synthetic and stiff bristles and influence consumer habits. In Europe, traditional brands often promote “natural bristles” and soft synthetic blends, and maintain a preference for fine finishes.
