What Is High-Imitation Tapered Filament? Understanding the Difference Between Visible Crimp and Fine Natural Crimp

What Is High-Imitation Tapered Filament? Understanding the Difference Between Visible Crimp and Fine Natural Crimp

Many people believe that high-imitation tapered filament is simply made by mixing some crimped filament into tapered filament. They think that once the filament has some visible waves, it becomes imitation bristle filament.

In fact, this understanding is not accurate.

Real high-imitation tapered filament is not just a simple mixture of tapered filament and crimped filament. The key is to make synthetic filament closer to natural bristle in appearance, hand feel, elasticity, soft tips, and brushing performance, while still keeping the advantages of synthetic filament, such as stable quality, good durability, and controllable production.

1. Not All Crimped Filament Can Be Called High-Imitation Bristle Filament

Natural bristle is not completely straight. It has natural elasticity, soft tips, and a slightly irregular structure. Because of this, some suppliers add crimped filament to make synthetic filament look more like natural bristle.

However, simply adding crimped filament is not enough to achieve a true high-imitation effect.

If too much crimped filament is added, or if the crimp is too obvious, the whole filament bundle may become lighter in weight and feel too hollow or fluffy. Although the filament may look wavy, it may not look natural enough compared with real bristle. Instead, it may give customers an artificial and less premium impression.

2. More Obvious Crimp Does Not Mean Better Quality

Some people think that the more obvious the crimp is, the more similar the filament is to natural bristle. Actually, high-end customers usually do not prefer very obvious crimped filament.

For high-quality high-imitation tapered filament, the crimp should be fine, natural, and not too visible. In many cases, the best effect is a crimp that is almost invisible from the outside, but can still be felt through the hand feel, elasticity, and brushing performance.

The final crimp effect is related to many factors, including the crimping rollers, crimping depth, temperature control, filament drawing process, and the technical level of each supplier. Different factories can produce very different results.

3. Comparison: Visible Crimp vs. Fine Natural Crimp

The photos below show the difference between visible crimped filament and fine natural crimped filament. The YZJD logo has been added to the images for brand presentation.

Figure 1. Comparison photo: visible crimp and fine natural crimp in high-imitation tapered filament.

On one side, the crimp is very visible. The filament looks wavy and fluffy, but it may not look natural enough compared with real bristle. If the crimp is pressed too deeply, the filament may also become more brittle and easier to break.

On the other side, the crimp is much finer and more natural. It is not very obvious from the outside, but it helps improve the hand feel, elasticity, and natural appearance of the filament. This type of subtle crimp is more suitable for high-end imitation bristle filament.

For high-imitation tapered filament, the best effect is not to make the waves very visible. The real value is to make the filament look natural, feel soft, and perform closer to natural bristle.

4. Deep Crimp May Cause Brittleness

Some suppliers press the crimp very deeply in order to make the wave effect more obvious. At first glance, this may make the filament look more crimped, but it can also create a serious problem: the filament may become brittle.

When the crimp is pressed too deeply, the internal structure of the filament may be affected. As a result, the toughness becomes weaker, and the filament may break more easily during brush production or during actual use.

Therefore, high-imitation tapered filament is not about making the filament as wavy as possible. It is also not about making the crimp as deep as possible. A good high-imitation filament must achieve the right balance between natural crimp, soft tips, good elasticity, and reliable toughness.

5. High-End Customers Prefer Invisible Natural Crimp

For high-end paint brush customers, the most important point is the overall using experience, not whether the crimp looks obvious.

A good high-imitation tapered filament should have the following features:

• Natural appearance, without obvious artificial waves;

• Solid hand feel, not too light, hollow, or fluffy;

• Soft tips, giving a smooth and delicate brushing feeling;

• Good elasticity, allowing the brush to recover naturally after use;

• Stable toughness, reducing the risk of broken filament;

• Overall performance closer to natural bristle.

The real technical value is not in making the crimp very visible. It is in creating a natural effect that customers may not clearly see, but can clearly feel when they touch and use the brush.

This is why many high-end customers prefer fine and natural crimp instead of obvious and deep crimp.

6. Our High-Imitation Tapered Filament

Yangzhou Jingdu Brush Co., Ltd. / Jiangsu Immense New Material Co., Ltd. is one of the earlier factories specializing in the development and production of high-imitation filament.

We focus on paint brush filament, imitation bristle filament, and high-end tapered filament. Our high-imitation tapered filament belongs to the soft series. It features good elasticity, soft tips, natural hand feel, and stable toughness.

We do not simply mix obvious crimped filament into tapered filament. Instead, we control the raw material formula, filament drawing process, crimping process, and tapering process together, so that the final product is closer to natural bristle in both appearance and performance.

A truly good high-imitation tapered filament should not look artificially wavy. It should feel natural, soft, smooth, elastic, and stable during use.

7. Conclusion

The key point of high-imitation tapered filament is not simply adding crimped filament. It is the result of precise process control, designed to make synthetic filament closer to natural bristle in appearance, hand feel, and brushing performance.

If the crimp is too obvious, it may not look like natural bristle. If the crimp is pressed too deeply, the filament may become brittle. If the bundle is too light, the hand feel may become hollow and fluffy. If the tips are not soft enough, the brushing effect will not be smooth and delicate.

Real high-end high-imitation tapered filament should be natural, soft, elastic, tough, and durable.

This is the main difference between high-imitation tapered filament and ordinary tapered filament mixed with obvious crimped filament.
