What Are Hooked Bristles? Quick Factory Test for Hog Bristle (100-count method)

“Hooked bristles” (also called J-shaped bristles) are bristles that show a clear hook-like bend or reverse hook at a specific section — not a smooth natural curve.

In paint brush production, hooked bristles commonly lead to tangles, combing resistance, bundle unevenness, and slower setting speed.

Why Hooked Bristles Reduce Setting Efficiency

When hooked bristles are present at higher rates, factories often see:

  • combing jams and frequent line stops

  • uneven bundles and unstable brush face appearance

  • more manual sorting and rework

  • higher breakage/shedding risk

Fast Testing Methods (Factory-Friendly)

Method 1: 100-count Sampling (Recommended)

  1. Take random samples from at least 3 positions (top/middle/bottom) in each bag/carton

  2. From each position, count 100 bristles

  3. Identify hooked/J-shaped bristles and calculate the ratio (%)

Method 2: Combing Resistance Test (Very Practical)

Comb the same weight of bristle through a fine comb/needle comb:

  • smooth pass = low hook/tangle risk

  • frequent catching = higher hook/short hair/contamination risk

Method 3: Single-Fiber Light Rotation (Verification)

Rotate one bristle under light to confirm sharp bend points and hook heads.
