One Minute to Know About the Raw Material of Paint Brush

Part 1: Natural bristles and Mixture of Natural Bristles and synthetic bristles
1. 100% Natural Bristle (10% of customers choose)
Animal hair has been the earliest material used for paint brushes, with a long history of use before the development of synthetic filament brushes. It is recommended for use with oil-based paints or chemical solvent/alkaline paints, as the material's surface is mostly hydrophilic, providing excellent paint release efficiency for oil-based paints. It can smoothly and steadily adhere paint to the target surface, and the split-tip structure of the bristles achieves a good painting effect.
- Applications: Ideal for oil-based paints, varnishes, and stains. Best for achieving fine finishes on furniture and cabinetry.
- Best Use: Works well with softer paints for a smooth application; not recommended for water-based products.
- Price: Expensive, and given that many countries predominantly use water-based paints, it may not be the best choice today.
- Price Range: USD 8/KG to USD 53/KG
2. Natural Bristle Mixture Polyester Bristle (40% of customers choose)
- Applications: Suitable for both oil-based and water-based paints, making them versatile for various projects.
- Best Use: Excellent for general-purpose painting where flexibility in paint type is required.
- Price: Reasonably priced, making them a popular choice.
- Price Range: USD 5/KG to USD 22/KG
Part 2: Synthetic bristles
Synthetic filaments are currently the mainstream material for paint brushes, recommended for use with water-based paints. Their hydrophobic surface offers excellent paint release efficiency for water-based paints, resulting in a non-sticky feel and smooth handling.
In contrast, animal hair, being a natural material, has an unstable supply and price fluctuations, making it harder to control brush characteristics. Synthetic filament materials not only provide stable prices and material supply but also allow for control over filament thickness to adjust hardness and finesse.
The tips can be processed to a fine point, and different polymer materials can be blended to create brushes with varied performance, greatly enhancing the controllability of brush effects. The three main common materials are:
1. 100% Polyester Bristle (40% of customers choose)
Polyester material has a higher hardness, providing better strength and support when made into brushes. It is also more wear-resistant, making it suitable for rough surfaces. The surface of polyester filaments is rougher than that of nylon, which enhances their ability to hold paint. Polyester is often used to increase the paint capacity of brushes and to control the hardness and feel of the bristles.
- Applications: Outstanding for water-based paints and finishes. Commonly used for wall painting, trim, and ceiling work.
- Best Use: Ideal for DIY projects and professional painting, particularly where durability and ease of cleaning are priorities.
- Price: Competitive, with many colors available to choose from.
- Price Range: USD 2/KG to USD 12/KG
2. Polyester Mixture Nylon Bristle (5% of customers choose)
- Applications: Can handle a mix of paints, suitable for both indoor and outdoor projects.
- Best Use: Great for painting surfaces that require flexibility, such as textured walls.
- Price: Slightly more expensive compared to other options.
- Price Range: USD 8/KG to USD 25/KG
3. 100% Nylon (5% of customers choose)
Nylon material is a softer and more flexible option, making it suitable for flat surfaces. The smooth and glossy surface of nylon filaments can enhance the paint release efficiency of brushes; however, if the weight is too high, it may reduce the amount of paint the brush can hold.
- Applications: Often used for applying heavy coatings and adhesives, as well as water-based paints.
- Best Use: Best for precision work and cutting in edges due to their stiffness and sharpness.
- Price: Expensive and cannot be chemically tapered. Mechanical flagged options may have rough tips, affecting the smoothness of paint application.
- Price Range: USD 22/KG to USD 40/KG
